FuturePhoneBooth at BLOOM

FuturePhoneBooth at BLOOM

FutureCoast unveiled its FuturePhoneBooth at BLOOM, an evening of environmental art held on Lighthouse Point, Santa Cruz. People toured the many Listening Stations in the park and then lined up for their turn creating voicemails from the future in the booth.

At the Science Museum’s Dana Center in Kensington, attendees listened to voicemails and came up with some quite interesting interpretations of the futures they had leaked from. They also valued being able to ‘phone an expert’ when the time came to make their own voicemails. The event was presaged by chronofalls – sudden appearances of artifacts from the future in Kensington Gardens, Crystal Palace, and the banks of the River Avon in Bristol.

FutureCoast and The Exploratorium

FutureCoast and The Exploratorium

FutureCoast brought a participatory challenge to the “Conversations About Landscape” series at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Attendees created their own voicemails from the future while surrounded by the time-visualizing exhibits and sweeping views of the Bay Observatory.

Future Voicemails at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

Participants in our recent event at the Smithsonian American Art Museum got a special treat. A chronofall happened inside the museum galleries, leading searchers to explore the collection from a future thinking and climate change perspective. Not only were voicemails recorded; objects from the futures were also created – inspired by the sounds of other FutureVoicemails.

Chronofall & Voicemail Creation in Brighton, UK

Chronofall & Voicemail Creation in Brighton, UK

Dr. Sarah Atkinson and Dr. Julie Doyle hosted a voicemail creation workshop at the University of Brighton. As residents of the southern coast of England and subjects of the winter flooding in the region, participants in this workshop had a very personal connection to climate change.

The YouthCaN group at AMNH recovered a chronofact, did forwardhearing, and created some future voicemails in our 90-minute workshop. In the words of the students:

“It was fun because it made us think and be physical and be creative.”

“It teaches you that even though we think we know what the future has in store, it’s like we don’t care and we just ignore it.”

Thanks to all the new friends of FutureCoast who saw us at the PoLAR Partnership booth at the American Geophysical Union annual conference in San Francisco. Very interesting discussions with visitors from all over the world!

Voicemail creation workshop in Ojai

Voicemail creation workshop in Ojai

We spent some lovely hours in the Ojai valley as part of the Thacher School’s ‘Power of Story’ workshops. With students we listened to FutureCoast voicemails and talked about what makes a voicemail sound authentic and what the future that it comes from might be like. The students then recorded voicemails of their own. One voicemail even referenced a local tradition of getting a holiday when it snows (a very rare event in this Southern California town).
